Our Story

The American Institute of Building Science (AIOBS) is a national training organization dedicated to advancing energy efficiency, health, comfort, and cost-effectiveness in buildings. We deliver high-impact, hands-on training that equips construction professionals and home performance specialists with the skills to apply building science best practices on the jobsite—where it matters most.

AIOBS was founded to bridge the gap between cutting-edge building science and real-world jobsite practices. We believe that lasting learning doesn’t happen solely behind a desk- it happens in the field. That’s why our programs combine classroom instruction with immersive, on-the-ground experience to ensure our trainees gain both knowledge and confidence through doing.

Our founder, Mark A. Lera, is a nationally recognized leader and trainer in the industry. With decades of field experience and a deep respect for the trades, Mark has taught thousands of professionals across the country. His engaging, accessible teaching style helps learners grasp not just the “how,” but the critical “why” behind every building science principle.

At the core of our curriculum are the nationally respected standards of the Building Performance Institute (BPI). We offer training aligned with BPI certifications- including Building Analyst, Envelope Professional, and Healthy Home Evaluator- ensuring our graduates leave with both job-ready skills and credentials that matter.

Our growing network of IREC-certified Master Trainers enables us to deliver consistent, high-quality instruction anywhere in the U.S. Whether on new construction sites, retrofit projects, or in underserved communities, we bring training directly to the people doing the work.

AIOBS proudly supports our nation’s veterans by creating clear career pathways into the civilian workforce. Our training programs are designed to harness the discipline, resilience, and leadership veterans bring to the jobsite- qualities essential to building a stronger, more skilled workforce. We are equally committed to empowering underserved communities, including at-risk youth and historically marginalized populations, to participate fully in the clean energy economy.

Energy efficient buildings are absolutely essential to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change. Poor indoor air quality in homes and apartments—often caused by the combustion of fossil fuels– has also been recognized as a major health risk to millions of Americans, particularly those with lower incomes. Disadvantaged Americans living in energy inefficient homes also spend a much higher percentage of their income on utility bills, often taking away money from other important needs such as food and medicine. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine causing steep increases in the cost of natural gas here in the U.S. but particularly in Europe, energy efficient buildings now also have an increasingly important role to play in strengthening the security of the U.S. and that of our allies.
